News Night hires a new Defense of the Dark Arts instructor, who teaches them how to use sensational stories to lure back lost viewers. Ratings improve their chances to get the Republican debate. Will allows Brian Brenner, Mac's cheat-buddy, to write a profile of News Night. Sloan struggles with body dysmorphia and lack of airtime to report on the impending financial crisis. Neal wants to pose as an internet troll and destroy them from within, because Mac has lots of airtime to spend on this sort of thing and we totally can't see anyone's issues in this storyline. Charlie meets with Late for Dinner and then offers to serve Leona some, cold.

Honestly this one was very dense, and I was sooo tired, but let's see what I wrote down.

Loved:

Mac: "We just need to hope there's no new piece of nonsense I have to jam into my 22 minutes of Short Attention Span Theater."
Jim: "Anthony Weiner accidentally tweeted a picture of his groin to 40 thousand followers."

DON'S WHOLE THING.

Stephen Henderson (Late for Dinner) was on New Amsterdam! Right, no one watched it. Moving on...

Charlie warning Leona. Rubbing my hands together with anticipation. (They better not fuck this up.)

Hated:

Mac being bitchy. They've made a programming decision; I think it's highly unprofessional and unrealistic for someone in her position to keep snarking about it in front of her staff. LEAD your people, Mac. Stop flailing and whining. Ugh.

Also, everything Mac wears is like Bland with Bland accents. (Apparently I really hate her breathing guts this week. :)

Really, Aaron? After all this, there's soon to be time in the newscast for Neal's troll story?

Sad. Sloan is generally strong and cool, but she's SO insecure about her (gorgeous! hello) body that she won't let Neal say something negative (anonymously, and for a story) on the internet and she's so overcome with insecure fury that she pushes him into a wall? Twice?

This was such a great episode; the best so far in my opinion. The only thing that continuously bothers me about the show is the undertone of misogyny. It’s gotten better, absolutely; but the fact that eight episodes in we’re still talking about it is a little ridiculous. Now, I forgot to DVR the show but a Dish coworker tweeted me a link to it at dishonline.com, so I watched it on my iPad during my bus ride to work this morning. This is definitely worth a re-watch. Don’s bit on Nancy Grace was spot-on, and the entire episode’s commentary on the Casey Anthony trial and how the national news covered it was brilliantly, scathingly done.

Hi!

It’s gotten better, absolutely; but the fact that eight episodes in we’re still talking about it is a little ridiculous.

I agree. I can't decide whether it's misogyny, plain old sexism, or just Aaron having developed really bad taste in women (characters). Because I think he thinks these women are charming, smart, funny and magical.

I also agree episodes have been getting better, in general. Hope for Season 2!

DON'S WHOLE THING.
That was great, wasn't it Mary? That whole scene, even the pan to reveal Don's in the room.

"I've enlisted the help of a master of the Dark Arts."
"I understand I'm needed ... forget everything you know about the news."
"Done. What's next?"

I liked the way he broke it down, too. Regardless of how we feel about Sorkin's idealized news show, that is actually what they're doing on Nancy Grace's house of horrors.

Mac being bitchy. They've made a programming decision; I think it's highly unprofessional and unrealistic for someone in her position to keep snarking about it in front of her staff. LEAD your people, Mac. Stop flailing and whining. Ugh.
You know, that didn't bother me as much. I get what I think you're saying -- that to be a good leader she needs to get behind the idea, so that the staff will do the same -- but it's incredibly disappointing for Mac, I'm sure. The staff will do it because they recognize they have to, but I suspect Mac pretending it's a great position to be in wouldn't make them any less disappointed.

Also, everything Mac wears is like Bland with Bland accents.
There's a shortage of bright colors in that newsroom, isn't there? Unless it's Maggie on New Year's Eve.

well, we all know Sorkin thinks there's nothing that beats a woman in a red dress.....

Blondes, especially. Surprising, in retrospect, that Dana Whittaker never wore one.

Hmmm... men in tuxedos.... blonde women in sexy red dresses.... must be a Sorkin script! (but lets face it... there's no way Maggie fits into ANYTHING of Lisa's... unlesss they have the same shoe size ;P )

Yeah, I agree -- she shouldn't pretend to feel other than she does. I'm just saying there's a way to get your team to do something you disagree with. I've been in that situation lots of times. Snarking about it just makes everyone feel defeated and antagonistic toward leadership. And there's something about it that communicates powerlessness. People complain a lot when they can't change the situation, so I feel like Mac is acting like a junior team member when she does that.

What I'd like to see her do is say, "Look, this isn't what I want us to do, but here's why we're doing it. And let's do it well and get those ratings up, because we really want to carry that debate."

I liked the way he broke it down, too. Regardless of how we feel about Sorkin's idealized news show, that is actually what they're doing on Nancy Grace's house of horrors.

Yes, it was fascinating, wasn't it? I just loved that part. Helps that NG makes my skin crawl.

You're a fundamentally decent human being. She does that to all of us. :)

Welcome to Keytus Television!

Keytus Television is a community dedicated to thoughtful discussion of quality television programs. New viewers are always welcome.

Rules of the Road

• PLAY WELL WITH OTHERS!! There’s a big difference between having a respectful disagreement and outright belligerence, as 99.44% of you know. For the .56% percent who don’t, this isn’t the place for you. Being the loudest one in the room, won’t get you nearly as far as being the one with the most thoughtful, introspective observations.

• Track the changes of any of the shows that you are watching/following. In this age of streaming sites and DVDs, we all won’t be watching the same show at the same time. It might be days/weeks/months/years(!) in between when you last posted and someone else responds to something you said.

• Keep the conversation centered on scripted television related topics. Dramas, comedies, reality tv, even documentaries are all fine. Movies, sporting events, rock concerts, not so much.

• The topic for the weekly threads is merely a suggestion. Feel free to talk about a show that has nothing to do with the weekly topic!

• For the sake of your mods sanity, please put the show and season (or episode) in the subject line of your comments. It makes it easier when we go back and tag the threads.

• One show (or episode) per post and only one sub-thread for each show (or episode). It makes it easier for others to follow the conversation.

• The Mods are your friends. Please feel free to contact us with any questions, comments or requests.

• Pardon our dust. This is a new thing we’re trying out here. While we have tried to anticipate this community’s needs, rules will be modified as we find out what works and what doesn't. Please bear with us.
